Have you ever found yourself completely stuck during practice, work, or even your daily routine? You’re sitting there, feeling the frustration bubble up, and suddenly it all feels like too much. The negative thoughts spiral out of control: “I can’t do this,” “What’s wrong with me?” “Why can’t I just get it together?”
If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone. I’ve been there, and so have so many of my clients. But here’s the good news: there’s a way to break free from that spiral. It’s quick, it’s simple, and it works.
I call it the Power Reset Ritual, and it’s a tool that can transform how you approach those tough, stuck moments.
This ritual was born in a coaching session with a client who needed something to stop the overwhelm and frustration they were experiencing in the practice room. They didn’t need complicated advice or a long checklist—they needed something easy and actionable.
Together, we created the Power Reset Ritual, and it’s now a go-to strategy for many of my clients. They use it not just in their musical work, but in so many other areas of life.
And the best part? You can try it today.
What Is the Power Reset Ritual?
The Power Reset Ritual is a simple, five-step process designed to help you quickly calm your mind, reconnect with your confidence, and take meaningful action. Whether you’re in the middle of a frustrating practice session or feeling overwhelmed by life’s demands, this ritual is here to bring you back to clarity and focus.
How to Use the Power Reset Ritual
Here’s how it works:
1. Breathe: Start by reconnecting with your breath. Take a deep inhale for four counts, hold it gently for four counts, and exhale for six counts. Do this as many times as you need to feel calmer. This isn’t just about slowing down—it’s about activating your parasympathetic nervous system, which helps reduce stress and quiet your mind.
2. Ground Yourself: Notice your physical connection to the present moment. Feel your feet on the ground, your back against the chair, or your hands resting on your lap. Bring your attention to your body and where you are right now. This simple act of grounding pulls you out of the spiral of negative thoughts and into the present moment.
3. Visualize a Win: Think back to a time when you felt confident, capable, and successful. Picture it vividly: what were you doing? How did it feel? What were you thinking? Let this memory remind you of your strengths and what you’re capable of achieving.
4. Set an Intention: Choose a short mantra or phrase that gives you direction. It could be something like:
“I trust myself.”
“I am focused and calm.”
“One thing at a time.”
Use this intention to center yourself and clear the mental noise.
5. Take One Actionable Step: Ask yourself: “What’s one small thing I can do right now to move forward?” Focus on a single, manageable step—whether it’s tackling a tricky passage, organizing your workspace, or writing one email. Complete that step, and let the momentum carry you forward.
Why It Works
The Power Reset Ritual works because it’s grounded in simplicity and practicality. Each step is designed to interrupt the negative cycle and help you move from overwhelm to action:
Breathing calms your nervous system and clears your mind.
Grounding anchors you in the present moment.
Visualization reconnects you with your confidence and strengths.
Intention-setting provides focus and clarity.
Action-taking builds momentum and gives you back control.
Together, these steps shift your mindset, empowering you to face challenges with clarity and confidence.
