“I’m Just Not Ready Yet” – Why That Might Be the Lie Holding You Back

Have you ever caught yourself saying, “I need to be better before I…”?

Maybe it’s before you take an audition. Maybe before you finally reach out to that mentor .Or before you apply to that teaching job, or go after that dream performance opportunity.

Here’s the truth I want to offer today:That voice telling you “I’m not ready yet”?It’s not your truth. It’s your fear.

And waiting for that magical moment when you finally feel ready? It might be the very thing that’s keeping you stuck.

The Readiness Myth

One of the most common things I hear from musicians is, “I just need to practice a little more… then I’ll be ready.”

But readiness doesn’t just show up one day.

You don’t magically feel “ready. ”You create readiness by taking action.

You build the plane as you fly it.

And it’s in the flying - wobbly, imperfect, uncertain - that you actually become the musician you're aiming to be.

Just like babies don’t wait until they have perfect balance before learning to walk… You don’t need to feel 100% confident to take your next step.

Babies wobble. They fall. They get up again.

And with each wobbly step, they learn. They grow stronger. They start to walk.

The same is true for you.

The Real Cost of Waiting

I’ve coached incredible musicians who almost didn’t take their next step because they didn’t feel ready.

They were stuck in preparation loops… refining and rehearsing, but avoiding the leap.

But once they committed, once they took that audition, joined the program, stepped into that scary room, everything changed.

One client told me, “I can’t believe I almost talked myself out of this. I was ready. I just didn’t believe it yet.”

That’s what this is about.

It’s about trusting yourself before the belief is fully there. Taking the leap before you feel fully prepared. Because that’s how belief is built.

Your Next Move

If there’s something you’ve been holding back on, something you’d love to do, but keep postponing until you “feel ready,” I want you to do this:

  1. Flip the question: Stop asking, “Am I ready?” and ask instead, “What do I need to do to make this happen?”

  2. Name the fear: Feeling afraid doesn’t mean you’re not ready. It means you care. And it means you’re growing.

  3. Take one small action: Just one. Do the thing that moves you forward, even if it’s just by an inch.

And remember: The musicians who grow? They don’t wait. They decide.

If this hit home…
